After Keratin: 5 Aftercare Rules That Keep Hair Smooth
You walk out of the salon with perfectly smooth hair — and from here it is all up to you. Keratin is not forever-magic; it is a protective film sealed around every strand, and its lifespan is decided by home care. In our experience, clients who follow the rules wear smoothness for 4–5 months, while those who wash with whatever shampoo is at hand are back after two. The good news: there are only five rules, and none of them takes heroic effort.
The first 72 hours after the treatment matter most. The formula is still setting inside the hair shaft after the flat-iron sealing, so rule one is categorical: keep hair completely dry. No washing, no rain without an umbrella, no sea or pool dips, no intense workouts that leave your scalp sweaty. If a strand gets wet by accident, do not panic but act at once: blow-dry it downwards and pass a flat iron over it on low heat so the film does not set with a kink.
Rule two: no kinks, bends or creases for the first three days. No ponytails or buns, no clips or bobby pins, no tucking hair behind your ears, no sunglasses or headbands on your head. Any crease fixed during this window can stay a visible line for months — only a repeat treatment removes it. Sleep with hair loose, or if long hair bothers you, drape it loosely over the pillow. A silk or satin pillowcase is worth the investment: cotton creates friction that lifts frizz even on healthy hair.
Rule three: sulfate-free care — forever, not for a week. Sulfates (SLS and SLES on the shampoo label) are aggressive detergents that literally wash the keratin film away: instead of 5 months the effect lasts two. Choose a sulfate-free shampoo, wash with warm rather than hot water, lather twice but gently, without wringing the lengths. Do a nourishing mask on the lengths once a week — it does not strip keratin, it keeps elasticity. Conditioner after every wash is the mandatory minimum.
Rule four is Varna-specific: sea humidity, salt and sun. Black Sea air alone tests smoothness: the hygroscopic hair shaft absorbs moisture and starts to frizz. So in summer always carry a leave-in spray or a light oil — applied to dry hair before going out, they build a barrier. Seawater and pool chlorine are keratin’s direct enemies: before swimming, wet your hair with clean fresh water and apply an oil or leave-in conditioner so the shaft absorbs less salt. After the sea, always rinse with fresh water, even on days you do not shampoo.
Rule five: heat protection every time, plus smart coloring plans. Flat irons, blow-dryers and curling wands are not banned after keratin — warmth even refreshes smoothness — but every heating session needs a heat-protectant spray. Without it, high temperatures evaporate moisture from inside the shaft and the film breaks down faster. Plan coloring ahead: no later than 2 weeks before keratin, or 2–3 weeks after, because lightening formulas and the keratin treatment conflict, and your shade may shift half a tone after the procedure.
An honest word about keratin itself, since myths abound. The modern formulas we work with are formaldehyde-free: this is a smoothing treatment, not a medical cure — it does not “heal” hair from within, it seals a protective layer around it. That is exactly why home care decides how long the result lasts, and why we insist on sulfate-free cosmetics. If you doubt your shampoo, bring it to the check-up visit and we will review its ingredients for free.
One last thing: come for a check-up visit 2–3 weeks after the treatment. We assess the film condition, check the ends and adjust your home routine for free if something went off track.
How often may you wash? Less is more: daily washing wears the film down even with sulfate-free shampoo. Aim for 2–3 times a week; dry shampoo applied to the roots the evening before carries you between washes. Strictly avoid clarifying shampoos and acid scalp peels — those are keratin removers, not aftercare.
Typical mistakes we see every month: sauna and hot styling without heat protection in week one, “urgent pre-holiday” coloring three days after keratin, henna or basma over the film — plant pigments sit patchy on a sealed cuticle. If coloring cannot wait, warn your colorist about the fresh keratin: a skilled one adjusts developer and timing. And remember the pillowcase — cotton roughs up even a perfect blowout overnight; silk pays for itself within a week.
When should you repeat? Do not wait until the effect is fully gone: the sweet spot is every 3–5 months, when regrowth shows but the lengths still hold smoothness. A repeat visit is always quicker and cheaper than the first, since we work mostly on regrowth. Follow these five rules and smoothness holds 4–5 months even in Varna’s humid seaside climate. Exact pricing is quoted at consultation depending on length and density — book in, let us look at your hair and build your care plan.
