Green Client, Henna and Keratin: Dispatches From the Basin

Last week I spent four hours removing the last traces of henna from a woman's head. She had applied it herself, at home, following advice from the internet, where as we all know only sensible people live. Her hair was green. Not greenish. Green, like a kiwi. And somewhere during the third rinse, my phone rang with a question about keratin on colored hair. Third call that week.

Which is why this article exists: so I can answer once and then just send the link, like every sensible person has done since 2015.

The secret the keratin industry likes to keep quiet: keratin holds better on colored hair. There. I said it. The beauty blogs can shut down.

Explaining: dye lifts the cuticle scales, so the formula penetrates deeper, the same way warm bread takes butter better than cold bread takes butter. On virgin coarse curls, keratin lives about three months. On colored hair, four to five. Two hours of salon work save you half a year of styling, and saving time is the only currency that never crashes.

The one rule: color first, keratin two weeks later. Reverse it and you end up with something that looks like the south of France in August: everything washed out. Dye needs time to stabilize inside the shaft. Ten days is nearly always enough, but I tell clients two weeks because I am a belt-and-braces kind of person, not a daredevil.

Now, blondes. I am one, which qualifies me to say stupid things about blondes. Total blonde and keratin get along, but if your hair is bleached to porridge, nothing will save it. First two to three months of repair (our Cold repair runs 120 to 150 minutes), then keratin, then back to bleaching after three weeks. And use toning: it is cheaper than the therapy you will need after a green incident.

Speaking of turning people away. I refuse henna and basma hair (the result is unpredictable, sometimes green, and the client who wanted platinum was not thrilled, though I did warn her), active shedding (trichologist first), and fresh perms: keratin relaxes the waves, so you pay for the perm, then the keratin, then the perm again. At that point it is not beauty, it is a pyramid scheme.

The numbers: two-layer keratin, botox or nanoplastia on 20 to 30 cm of length starts at 107 euros and takes up to 240 minutes. Full bleaching from 87 euros. Glossing from 46 euros. Then there is homework: sulfate-free shampoo, because sulfates strip the formula in a month instead of five. Yes, that shampoo costs as much as two coffees. Still cheaper than a second keratin, and it does not require parking near the salon.

Also: for the first 48 hours, no washing, no hair ties, no clips. The hair is still curing, and a tie imprint looks like modern art, and fixing modern art costs extra.

And since we are in Varna, the sea. The sea is lovely, but salt water eats keratin the way I eat donuts on a Friday: quietly, then completely. Fresh water rinse after the beach. That is it.
