Keratin on Colored Hair: Yes, and Here Is the Right Order

A client who colors her hair every three weeks asked me this week whether keratin was off the table for her. Quite the opposite: on colored hair, keratin actually holds up better than on virgin hair. But only under one condition, which is the right order of procedures. And that is exactly where most salons get it wrong, including the ones that charge more than we do.

The rule comes first, the reasoning right after.

Color first, keratin two weeks later. Fresh keratin seals the hair shaft. The cuticle, the outer layer of overlapping scales, lies flat, and the formula stays locked inside. Dye applied over that surface takes poorly and washes out quickly, going with the film. So the sequence reverses: color first, then a pause, then keratin. The pigment ends up inside and stays there. My bleached clients notice an unexpected bonus, too: after keratin, the yellow undertone surfaces more slowly, because porous ends no longer pull the pigment out.

Why two weeks? Dye needs time to fully stabilize inside the shaft. Ten days is usually enough, but two weeks is the guarantee I have worked with for the past eight years. In all that time, I have never once seen color shift when the order was right.

If that is hard to picture, there is a simple analogy. Colored hair resembles fabric fresh out of the wash: the fibers are slightly raised and absorb everything easily. Keratin works like pressing that fabric with a hot iron. The surface turns smooth and passes far less in or out. So you pour the color in first, then you press.

Keratin lasts longer on colored bases. From there follows a fact few people expect: on a colored base, keratin lasts longer. On untouched coarse curls it holds about three months. On colored hair I consistently see four to five, since the dye has already lifted the cuticle and the formula penetrates deeper. This is the only group of clients I honestly tell they got lucky with their hair history.

Bleached hair is its own conversation. Bleaching deserves its own paragraph. Total blonde and keratin can coexist, with one caveat: hair bleached to a pulp holds the formula poorly, like a sponge with no walls. When porosity is high, the honest path runs through two to three months of cold repair first (our Cold repair treatment runs 120 to 150 minutes), and only then straightening. Bleaching over fresh keratin should wait at least three weeks, and toning beats full color there: gentler pigment, no cuticle lifting.

Who I turn away. Some cases I turn away. Hair treated with henna or basma gives unpredictable results, up to a greenish tint: pure henna does this occasionally, and the client who was aiming for platinum blonde was not thrilled. Active shedding means a trichologist first. A fresh perm should settle for a month, because keratin partially relaxes new waves, and the client loses both money and curls.

The numbers. Now the numbers, because without them the conversation stays abstract. Two-layer keratin, botox or nanoplastia on 20 to 30 cm of length starts at 107 euros and takes up to 240 minutes. Full-length bleaching starts at 87 euros. Glossing between color sessions starts at 46 euros. The rest is home care: a sulfate-free shampoo is non-negotiable, since sulfates strip the formula in three to four weeks instead of five. And yes, that is the twelve-euro bottle that feels overpriced next to the regular one. It is still cheaper than a repeat procedure. The sea in Varna is a factor of its own, so rinse your hair with fresh water after the beach.

The first 48 hours decide half the outcome. No ties, no clips, no washing: the hair is still curing, and a tie's imprint later calls for a repeat procedure. Tested on impatient clients, more than once.

Book a free consultation. I will check your porosity, ask about your color history over the past year, and tell you honestly what your hair will take and what it will not.

Color before or after keratin? The order decides, and on colored hair the result lasts longer.
